    Get PDF
Due to immense increase in needs of human being, the power generation system encounters a deficiency of key energy sources as a result the demand is increasing day by day without an increase in alternative generation resources and transmission line capability. The constantly increase of electrical power        demands and loads, especially non-linear loads making the power system network become more        complicate to operate and the system becomes unstable with large power flows without proper control and operation. The advancement in power system with time have brings new challenges and sometimes it is difficult to operate system in stable condition due to complex    system network. One of the invention of power electronics is FACTS technology. FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) devices are based on power electronics and other dynamic controllers that provide control of one or more AC transmission system parameters to upgrade the controllability and to increase power transfer capability. One way to improve the power system control is by applying FACTS controllers such as D-STATCOM (Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator) which can be introduced to the power    system to regulate terminal voltage and to improve power factor of system.A comprehensive D-STATCOM controller is to be established which when will be introduced in the    power system will eliminate the voltage fluctuations and improve power stability. A test power system is    being designed in MATLAB Sim Power System with non-linear load and wind energy source as          renewable source and then the systems is analyzed with and without the D-STATCOM controller and both the result are being compared to check the performance of the designed D-STATCOM Controller. This millennium is the era of the globalization and info-tech. Advancement in communication technologies, melting boundaries and attractive incentives from the multinational organizations demand strong ethical and social responsibilities with effective organizational culture among its employees for productive results. Fundamentally, civil society organizations are considered development agents as they work as watch-dog monitoring the social abuses. But the study suggests that it’s not government agencies to impose rules rather knowledge workers (KW) should realize and pay due respect to ethical and social values. The culture and internal environment play very important role where every individual respect the general rules and they do get inspiration from their leaders, supervisors and employers.  To get the best from people and their respective organizations, effective leadership role of the executives is crucial.  The study concludes that every executive must strongly admit the importance of ethics and social responsibilities as the future success of organizations demands thorough understanding of interaction between productivity and ethics among knowledge workers. Organizations should concentrate on introducing HRD programmes, strengthen service orientation and create synergies to educate their staff for the ethical norms while unlocking their potentials in order to achieve long lasting productive results. undergraduate students’ academic performances and their social interpersonal skills in the Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University. Design/methodology/approach: 64 samples were collected from full-time undergraduate students studying in Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University from different colleges including Community college, College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Engineering and College of Pharmacy. The descriptive statistics analysis was used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics were used in testing the research hypotheses. The results obtained from the analyses were used to interpret the outcomes. Findings: The empirical results reveal that the students enjoy meeting new friends online using social media rather than meeting in person and for this reason they spend a lot of time – addicted. It is also confirmed that the bad comments are passed easily through social media affecting other's sentiments and most of them strongly believe that all the information in social media is true and reliable and the rumors were spread easily in social media. Further, it is also confirmed that social media does not support the Learning of the students. Practical Implications: The study confirms that the students exchange learning materials through social media and it helps them to update the developments in their college/university. The students believe that through Social media they have improved their communication skills and they can communicate with anyone at any time. It is also found that some of their teachers communicate with them and encourage them to use social media but for studying only.    Originality/value: The research work is of its first kind as it focuses on the impact of social media on the academic performances of the students studying in Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, which has suggested effective means for effective implementation of social media strategy

Fiscal Decentralization in Pakistan: 7th NFC Award as Case Study

    Get PDF
The globalization and its associated challenges have transformed the concept of decentralization from mere business of local government to a broader concept of Governance. By transferring payments to lower tiers of government, the central government actually tries to involve all federating units in economic development of the country. After independence, the Government of Pakistan adopted the colonial fiscal structure for payments and grants between the Centre and provinces but this mechanism could not be put into practice due to undemocratic political culture. The resource distribution formulas were often condemned by the smaller provinces being unjust. After enactment of 18th amendment to the 1973 Constitution, provinces were given more financial and administrative autonomy through 7th NFC Award based on the criterion of population, backwardness and inverse population density (IPD). This study finds that the constitutional reforms and 7th NFC award has strengthen the perception about provincial autonomy but due to capacity issues, benefits of fiscal decentralization could not be achieved in Pakistan. The efficacy of a state’s political system, irrespective of its type (democratic or non-democratic, liberal or centralized, presidential or parliamentary and representing common citizens or demonstrating only elite aristocrats etc.), depends upon the basic principle how much responsiveness it shows in serving the interest of the common people. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the resilience of the Chinese Model. The framework for the analysis is the governance, legitimacy and public participation in policy making process. The assessment of the Chinese politics reveals that the Communist Party of China (CPC) is dominating the overall governance. It has been making efforts to endorse rule of law, human rights, free trade, transparency and establishment of lasting relations across the world. The ruling party has created a sense of harmony and uniformity in the functioning of various branches of the government such as the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. The success of Chinese model with such an extreme domination of single party over a period of time denote that the Chinese society has been legitimizing the traditional position of CPC through elections at national as well as provincial levels.  It can easily be concluded that the resilience of the Chinese Model is reliant on the performance of the dominant Communist Party. This paper compares the voltage sag severity problems of two typical utilities operating in humid and dry hot environments. Based on power quality data and its analysis, it has been attempted to compare the quality of services to the customers of humid and dry weather terrains. To accomplish this study Tenaga asional Berhad (TNB) Malaysia and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Pakistan were chosen. Electrical distribution system fault histories of two utilities, leading to malfunctioning or indiscriminate operation of industrial process controlling computers, protective relays and AC type electromagnetic contactors thereby imposing costly shutdowns to quality conscious end users, were analyzed to establish the severity of voltage sag aggressiveness in both areas. Power quality reliability indices were calculated to measure the operational system performance. The study has been focused to formulate algorithm for estimating probability of nuisance trip outs in industrial organizations operating in humid and hot dry environments. Influence of poor power quality on industrial as well as utility protection and control equipment has been estimated from the field data spread over a few years. This power quality reliability study concludes that there are higher insulation levels for humid environments than the plain hot weathers. During this comparative power quality study project on the causes of voltage sags and steady state outages reliability indices, it was found that some 77% voltage sags were caused by short circuit faults on utility network, 11% due to inter facility faults but no cause could be assigned to remaining 14% voltage sags resulting in tripping of drives, draft fans, compressors PLCs, ammonia pumps, incinerators and process controllers. The reliability indices of humid utilities were found relatively poorer than its counterpart. The probability of severe voltage sags in humid environments was found to be much more than the dry hot weather terrain utilities
